Washing and caring for supports
How to keep a neoprene, knitted or strapped support clean and in shape, so it lasts and stays comfortable.
Check the label first
Manufacturers print care instructions on the product or its packaging, and those come first. What follows is general guidance that applies to most fabric supports.
Washing
Close all velcro fastenings before washing so they do not catch the fabric. Hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild soap; if the label allows a machine, use a gentle cycle in a laundry bag. Do not use bleach or fabric softener, and do not wring: press the water out gently.
Rigid parts, hinges and removable stays should be taken out where the design allows, and wiped rather than soaked.
Drying and storing
Dry flat, away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators; heat damages neoprene and elastic. Do not tumble dry or iron. Store the support flat or loosely rolled, with fastenings closed, rather than folded tightly for long periods.
When to replace
Elastic loses its stretch with use and washing. When a support no longer stays in place at the right setting, or the velcro no longer holds, it has done its job and it is time for a new one.
